Voice/Thyroid Update

I've had a lot of folks asking about my voice lately. I'm happy to report I'm at about 70%, which I feel is a big improvement! My cousin Jarrod pointed out that 70% of a Trichel voice is 100% of normal people's! Everyone that has talked to me on the phone lately has been saying is sounds stronger.

It's hard to believe that it has been almost a year since having the surgery and finding out I had cancer. I'm so thankful that it was found and removed, though, and not having a voice for a few months was a minor price to pay. I have full faith at this point that my full voice will come back given more time. Many sites, as well as the surgeon, said it could take six months to a year. A year for me will be November 5th.

I'm still not able to laugh out loud, instead I either silently chuckle or make some sort of hissing/hiccuping sounds, for which I apologize! Mike says he could even tell I was "yelling" at him the other day!! He's been off the hook for way too long!

In November, I'll go back for my follow-up body scan. This entails me getting injected two days in a row with radioactive iodine (a much smaller dose than my initial bubble-wrapped hospital stint last December). The third day I'll go in for a gamma ray body scan, in which we do not want to see anything lighting up. If there are some glowing parts, I may have to do the hospital deal again. Let's pray not and that I'll be over it and be declared officially cancer-free!

Everyone remember to get a yearly physical and have them palpate your thyroid area and check you levels with bloodwork. Better to catch such things early. For more information, click on the Thyroid Cancer link to the left.
