Well, I got home at 5am last night after watching Saphira recover from her emergency colic surgery. It went well and everyone is optimistic she will come out of this fine. She is up and alert and stable this morning.
Here's the bizarre part. She coliced because she had about 100 pounds or so of sand in her intestines. Our vet, who specializes in colics, had never seen anything to this extent. We are all totally baffled. Our place is sandy, but we only brought her home 10 days ago, and the vet feels like it would be near impossible for her to have ingested that much in that time.
The three months prior to us bringing her home, she was at the trainers, stalled with minimal access to sand other than when she was worked. The first four months we had her prior to the trainer, she was in a grassy pasture. So, we can only surmise that the bulk of this sand came with her from New Jersey.
Why she ingested so much, we may never know. This could explain the low weight she came to us in and us still not being able to put it back on her. Heck, maybe it explains her uncomfort riding in the trailer. It's amazing she has thrived at all in this condition.
All I can say is thank the Lord we got her to the vet in time and he did the surgery when he did, because that never would have passed on its own. I'm still in shock and just sitting here praying she comes out of everything ok. Thanks for your thoughts, prayers, and advice. Just bizarre ... And scary.
Mike watched the whole surgery and has pictures ... I sat in the waiting room and got text updates. The one time I did walk back and look through the glass, the doc heaved a giant intestine up and I almost fainted and ran away.
